Murrough O’Brien

Born to Irish and Indian parents, Murrough O’Brien has gained rich experience from the diverse aspects of different cultures. Trained as an acupuncturist, his path has also included meditation, martial arts and yoga. In 2008, Bulgarian singing discovered him. Through the London Bulgarian Choir, then VTI and the Swiss Bulgarian Choir, he encountered the kaval and Nikolay Doktorov – a wonderful musician and renowned teacher who plays with warmth and love directly from the heart. From Nikolay, Murrough received his first kaval in 2013, along with initiation into the style and he has studied with him regularly and continuously since 2020. In 2022, Murrough began teaching a beginner curriculum and is enthusiastic about spreading awareness of and transmitting the ability to play this little-known, enchanting, and versatile instrument.
